AMS 5796 is a sub-type specification of Cobalt L-605 superalloy, available at Tech Steel & Materials in the form of welding wire. Parts welded with AMS 5796 have many favorable properties, including excellent high-temperature strength of up to 1500 °F (1093 °C), and excellent oxidation resistance in corrosive environments like wet chlorine, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid.
AMS 5796 is used for welding all sub-type specifications of Cobalt L-605 superalloy, including AMS 5537, AMS 5759, ASTM F1091-12, and ASTM F90-14. The AMS 5796 welding wire can be used for welding using all standard methods, including tungsten arc, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc, electron beam, and resistance welding. Submerged welding arc process can also be used, but the resulting weld won’t have the desired properties. For optimum results, minimum restraint and low interpass temperature are recommended. Always finish the welding with rapid cooling.
The proposed heat treatment for achieving the best properties of parts welded with the AMS 5796 welding wire is the following:
Annealing at 2150 °F to 2250 °F (1176 °C to 1232 °C)
Rapid air cooling or water quenching
Parts welded with the AMS 5796 specification find use in high-temperature environments like combustion chambers of gas turbines used in aircrafts and power plants.
