Stainless Steel A286 AMS 5735

AMS 5735 is a sub-type specification of Stainless Steel A286, a precipitation-hardenable super-alloy that possesses many favorable properties. These include high strength at elevated temperatures, good high-temperature corrosion resistance up to 1300 °F (700 °C), and excellent low-temperature non-magnetic strength, down to -320 °F (-196 °C).

Tech Steel & Materials offers AMS 5735 in multiple shapes, including bars, forging, rings, and tubing. These come in a solution and precipitation heat-treated condition. The heat treatment starts with solution annealing at 1800 °F (980 °C), followed by oil quenching.

Thanks to the unique properties of AMS 5735, it finds use in various fields. Mainly, it is used for the manufacturing of turbine rotors, shafts, and blades in jet engines, automobile superchargers, and industrial gas turbines. Moreover, thanks to the corrosion properties and available shapes, AMS 5735 also finds use in high-temperature afterburner parts, tanks, piping, pumps, and heat exchangers.

This specification can be readily welded using all regular procedures, including gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, and shielded metal arc. Nickel-based steel can work as filler metal, but an A286 might be a better solution. AMS 5735 can be readily cold worked and formed, and machined using standard methods.
