AMS 4375 is a specification of Magnesium AZ31B 0, which is a magnesium alloy with outstanding strength to weight ratio, good corrosion resistance thanks to the anodized coating, and excellent weldability. Thanks to these properties, AMS 4375 is used for manufacturing of structural components in the aerospace industry, like for example aircraft fuselages.
Other than that, this alloy is also used in the automotive industry for manufacturing of complex parts that require high strength and low weight, such as wheels in supercars and racing cars. Some manufacturers of electronics also use Magnesium AZ31B 0 for cases of laptops and cell phones.
AMS 4375 is available in plates and sheets that are very easy to machine and form into complex shapes. However, considering the fact that the main component of this alloy is magnesium, special care must be obtained to minimize the chance of fire. Generally, chips and powder from the material are extremely flammable and should be minimized. AZ31B 0 can also be irritating to the human body, especially the eyes and airways.
Magnesium AZ31B 0 can be heat treated using stress relief at 300° F (149° C) for 30 to 60 minutes followed by air cooling, or annealed at 650° F (344° C) and cooled in the furnace.
