Huntsville, Alabama will soon become a major point of interest for private spaceflight.

Governor Kay Ivey has confirmed that Jeff Bezos aims to build a production facility in Huntsville to manufacture Blue Origin’s BE-4 rocket engines.

According to Ivey, this “helps cement Alabama as the preferred destination for the aerospace industry.”

All in all the new 200,000 square foot Blue Origin plant will be responsible for brining 342 new manufacturing jobs to Alabama and hundreds of others near the facility.

In addition, Blue Origin will pour $200 million in capital investments in Alabama.

Blue Origin President Robert Meyerson noted the company picked Huntsville because of its “skilled workforce and leading role in rocket propulsion development.”

We hear so much about Elon Musk and SpaceX that it’s easy to forget about Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin.

However, Bezos turned heads recently by telling The Washington Post that Blue Origin has interest in the moon.

Bezos has asked NASA to back an “Amazon-like shipment service for the moon that would deliver gear for experiments, cargo and habitats by mid-2020, helping to enable future human settlement of the moon.”

Lunar missions seem to be all the rage these days as SpaceX recently announced plans to go to the moon in the form of a fly-around.

Bezos believes Blue Origin’s Blue Moon spacecraft will be able to carry up to 10,000 pounds of cargo to the moon and it happens to be compatible with a large variety of launch vehicles.

The moon’s Shakleton Crater would be the preferred landing spot because of its plentiful sun exposure and water ice.

Blue Origin believes its Blue Moon is useful for “cost-effective delivery of mass to the surface of the moon. Any credible first lunar settlement will require that capability.”

Jeff Bezos has announced that his private space travel company, Blue Origin, has a tentative plan in place to send people into space in 2018.

Obviously, a lot could change between now and then, but to think we are only two years away from paying tourists being launched into space is crazy!

Blue Origin’s private space travel offering will encompass groups of up to six tourists at a time making short trips, assuming the company’s piloted test flights that commence in 2017 go smoothly.

In addition, tests on the company’s new BE-4 engine are scheduled to begin before the end of this year.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Blue Origin begins taking deposits for the company’s space taxi, as thousands have already expressed interest.

Unfortunately, there are only 6 spots up for grabs at a time.
