Nickel Waspaloy AMS 5828

Nickel Waspaloy AMS 5828

AMS 5828 is a specification of Nickel Waspaloy, a nickel-base age-hardenable superalloy with excellent high-temperature strength and good corrosion resistance by combustion products, notably to oxidation, at service temperatures of up to 1200°F (650°C) for critical rotating applications, and up to 1600°F (870°C) for less demanding applications. At temperatures over 1600°F (870°C), intergranular oxidation can occur.

This specification is available as welding wire and should be used for the following Nickel Waspaloy specifications: AMS 5544, AMS 5586, AMS 5704, AMS 5706, AMS 5707, AMS 5708, and AMS 5709. The AMS 5828 filler metal can be used for welding those parts in carefully controlled circumstances, with gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, and resistance welding processes.

That said, welds should be avoided in high-stress environments because the high-temperature strength of the weld is lower than a heat-treated material. In those conditions, the material may display hot short characteristics and may be sensitive to strain cracking.

In order to get the highest strength weld possible, it is recommended that the parts to be welded are only solution-treated before the welding process, and then re-solution treated after the welding.

AMS 5828 is vacuum induction melted and solution heat treated.
