AMS 5672 is the aerospace material specification covering Custom 455 (UNS S45500) wire. Custom 455 is an age-hardenable martensitic stainless steel that pairs very high attainable strength with the ductility needed for cold forming, which is exactly the balance a wire product demands.

What defines AMS 5672 within the Custom 455 family is that it’s the dedicated wire specification: material furnished soft or cold-drawn so it can be drawn, wound, and headed before age hardening, with the surface and dimensional control expected of wire rather than of bar. Where AMS 5617 lists wire as part of a broader bar-and-forging spec, AMS 5672 is written specifically for wire applications.
