Stainless Steel Custom 455 AMS 5617

AMS 5617 is the aerospace material specification covering Custom 455 (UNS S45500) bar, forging, and wire, supplied in the annealed condition. Custom 455 is an age-hardenable martensitic stainless steel that combines very high strength, up to about 245 ksi ultimate tensile after aging, with the easy machinability and formability of a soft, as-supplied bar.

What defines AMS 5617 within the Custom 455 family is that it’s the alloy’s primary structural specification, issued in two grades (Grade 1 and Grade 2) and produced by consumable-electrode vacuum melting for cleanliness. It covers the heaviest and most demanding product forms (bar and forging stock), so it’s the spec engineers reach for when a part will be machined or forged from solid and then hardened.
