AMS 5578 is the aerospace material specification covering Custom 455 (UNS S45500) welded tube, supplied in the annealed condition. Custom 455 is an age-hardenable martensitic stainless steel that reaches ultimate tensile strengths near 245 ksi after aging while offering good corrosion resistance, making it a high-strength alternative to conventional stainless tubing.

What defines AMS 5578 within the Custom 455 range is that it’s the alloy’s tube specification: thin-wall welded tube delivered soft, so it can be cut, bent, and fabricated before age-hardening it to full strength with minimal distortion.
