Stainless Steel A286 AMS 5731

AMS 5731 is a solution treated specification of Stainless Steel A286. The treatment includes heating to 1800 °F (980 °C) for one hour, followed by oil or water quenching. AMS 5731 has many favorable properties, including excellent strength at high temperatures, excellent corrosion resistance up to 1300 °F (700 °C), and low-temperature non-magnetic strength, down to -320 °F (-196 °C).

Thanks to its unique properties, AMS 5731 finds use in the aircraft industry. The alloy is mainly used to manufacture jet engine components, industrial gas turbine parts, non-magnetic cryogenic components, superchargers (automobiles), tanks, piping, pumps, heat exchangers, etc.

Tech Steel & Materials offers AMS 5731 in bar, custom tubes, forging, ring, tubing, and wires. The alloy can be readily welded using traditional methods, using the welding wire of a similar specification. Moreover, it’s best to weld the parts in the solution annealed condition and with a convex weld. That’s because cracking can occur if the parts are first aged and then welded.

AMS 5731 has good fabrication properties. The alloy is easily formed and cold-worked, and readily machined using standard methods and carbide inserts, similarly to austenitic steels. This specification also possesses good ductility. Meanwhile, the strength of the material increases by solution treating, followed by cold working and aging.
