Stainless Steel A286 AMS 5731

AMS 5731 is the aerospace material specification covering A286 stainless steel (UNS S66286) bars, wire, forgings, rings and tubing. It’s consumable-electrode melted and supplied solution heat treated at 1800°F (982°C), but not aged.

What defines AMS 5731 is that it delivers the creep-resistant 1800°F structure in its soft, workable state. Buyers choose it when they’ll forge, head, form or rough machine the part themselves, then age it at about 1325°F for 16 hours. The higher solution temperature coarsens the grain, which gives the best long-term stress-rupture and creep strength of the A286 conditions. That matters for engine parts that run hot for thousands of hours.

Typical AMS 5731 uses:

  • Forging stock for turbine wheels, discs and spacers
  • Rings and casings that are rolled or machined before aging
  • Bar for hot-section shafts and blades

For the same 1800°F material supplied already aged, see the companion specification AMS 5732.
