Nickel Inconel 718 AMS 5589

AMS 5589 is the aerospace material specification covering Inconel 718 (UNS N07718) seamless tubing supplied in the solution and precipitation (age) heat-treated condition. Inconel 718 is an age-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy known for an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, holding its strength from cryogenic temperatures as low as −423 °F (−253 °C) up to 1300 °F (704 °C). Those qualities make it one of the most widely specified superalloys for aerospace and gas-turbine fluid systems.

What defines AMS 5589 within the Inconel 718 tubing family is its heat-treat route. The tubing is solution annealed at 1775 °F (968 °C) with rapid cooling, then precipitation hardened at 1325 °F (718 °C) and furnace cooled to 1150 °F (620 °C). This lower-temperature solution treatment is chosen specifically to develop high creep- and stress-rupture strength at elevated temperature, so AMS 5589 tubing is the preferred choice where a line must carry load and pressure at temperature over long service periods without deforming.

Typical applications include jet-engine and land-based gas-turbine fluid and hydraulic lines, rocket propulsion tubing, cryogenic tankage lines, and high-pressure instrumentation. Inconel 718 is also one of the more readily welded superalloys, notably resistant to post-weld strain-age cracking, and is generally machined in the solution-treated condition before final aging.
