Cobalt Elgiloy
Elgiloy specialty metals are a high-performance cobalt-chromium-nickel alloy known for its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance. It is widely used in applications requiring reliable mechanical properties under cyclic loading, aggressive environments, or extreme service conditions.
This alloy is non-magnetic, highly resistant to corrosion, and capable of maintaining mechanical stability across a wide temperature range. Elgiloy® can be supplied in a solution-annealed condition and subsequently age-hardened to achieve very high strength levels, making it particularly well-suited for precision components and spring applications.
Applications of Elgiloy
Cobalt Elgiloy is commonly used in demanding applications across multiple industries, including:
- Precision springs and wire forms
- Medical devices and surgical instruments
- Aerospace components and control systems
- Oil and gas equipment
- Chemical processing and industrial systems
Its combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance makes it ideal for components subjected to repeated loading or harsh environments.
Cobalt Elgiloy FAQ
What is Elgiloy?
Elgiloy® is a high-performance cobalt-chromium-nickel alloy known for its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance. It is commonly used in applications requiring reliable mechanical properties under cyclic loading and harsh operating conditions.
Is Elgiloy magnetic?
No. Elgiloy is considered non-magnetic in its typical supplied and heat-treated conditions, making it suitable for applications where magnetic interference must be minimized.
What makes Elgiloy different from stainless steel?
Compared to stainless steel, Elgiloy offers significantly higher strength, superior fatigue resistance, and better performance in aggressive environments. These properties make it especially suitable for precision springs, medical devices, and aerospace components where long service life and dimensional stability are critical.
Is Elgiloy suitable for medical applications?
Elgiloy is commonly used in medical and surgical devices due to its corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, and fatigue performance. Suitability depends on application requirements and applicable regulatory or specification standards.
