Aluminum 6061 AMS 4248

AMS 4248 is the aerospace material specification covering 6061 aluminum hand forgings and rolled rings in the T652 temper.

What defines AMS 4248 is the stress-relief step. After solution heat treatment and quenching, each forging or ring is compressed by a controlled amount (typically 1-5% permanent set) before aging. That removes most of the residual stress the quench leaves behind. The payoff shows up in machining: when you cut deep pockets or remove a lot of material, a T652 forging stays flat and true instead of warping the way a plain T6 forging can.

Typical uses for AMS 4248 include:

  • Large hand forgings machined into bulkheads, frames and fittings
  • Heavily machined rings for housings and adapters
  • Thick blocks for precision tooling and fixtures

For standard T6 forgings and rings that don’t need stress relief, see the companion specification AMS 4127. Full chemical composition and mechanical properties are on the 6061 aluminum page.
