Aluminum 6061 AMS 4117
AMS 4117 is the aerospace material specification covering 6061 aluminum bar, rod and wire, rolled or cold finished, in the T6 and T651 tempers.
What defines AMS 4117 is that it’s the active aerospace spec for precision-sized 6061 bar stock. Cold finishing draws or rolls the bar to size, which gives tighter diameter tolerances, better straightness and a cleaner surface than extruded bar. That’s what CNC lathes and screw machines need for consistent, high-volume turned parts. T651 bar is stretched to relieve stress, so it doesn’t move when you machine it. It’s the current replacement for the cancelled QQ-A-225/8 and is often dual certified to ASTM B211.
Typical uses for AMS 4117 include:
- Turned fittings, connectors and couplings
- Pins, spacers, bushings and fastener blanks
- Valve bodies, pistons and actuator components
For legacy drawings that still call out the federal spec, see QQ-A-225/8. Full chemical composition and mechanical properties are on the 6061 aluminum page.
