Aluminum 6061 AMS 4023

AMS 4023 is a cancelled aerospace material specification that covered Alclad 6061 aluminum sheet and plate in the T6 temper, solution heat treated and artificially aged to full strength.

What defined AMS 4023 was that it paired 6061’s peak T6 strength with sacrificial cladding. That’s a combination you’d pick for structural sheet that also has to resist corrosion, where bare 6061-T6 would need heavier surface protection. Because the cladding is softer than the core, Alclad T6 has slightly lower overall strength than bare T6 of the same thickness, which designers allowed for in their margins. The spec has been cancelled, but it still appears on legacy drawings.

Where AMS 4023 callouts still turn up:

  • Older airframe structural sheet and access panels
  • Marine and coastal military equipment built to legacy drawings
  • Spares and repairs for long-service platforms

For current Alclad 6061, see AMS 4021. Full chemical composition and mechanical properties are on the 6061 aluminum page. Tech Steel & Materials helps buyers source material for legacy AMS 4023 requirements. Request a quote with your drawing callout and we’ll confirm the right replacement.
