Aluminum 1100 is a commercially pure aluminum alloy known for its excellent corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity, and superior workability. Tech Steel & Materials supplies Aluminum 1100 in bar, rod, wire, plate, sheet, and tubing forms to meet AMS and QQ-A specifications.
Aluminum 1100 – FAQ
What is Aluminum 1100?
Aluminum 1100 is a commercially pure aluminum alloy containing a minimum of 99.0% aluminum. It is widely selected for applications that require excellent corrosion resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, and exceptional workability. Because of its purity, it performs well in environments where resistance to oxidation and chemical exposure is critical.
What are the key properties of Aluminum 1100?
Aluminum 1100 is characterized by outstanding corrosion resistance, strong electrical and thermal conductivity, and very good formability and ductility. Its mechanical strength is relatively low compared to heat-treatable aluminum alloys, which makes it unsuitable for structural or load-bearing applications. As a result, it is most often used where strength is not the primary performance requirement.
Is Aluminum 1100 heat treatable?
No. Aluminum 1100 is not heat treatable. Its strength cannot be increased through heat treatment and can only be improved through cold working or strain hardening processes.
What industries commonly use Aluminum 1100?
Aluminum 1100 is frequently used in aerospace and defense applications for non-structural components, as well as in electrical and thermal systems where conductivity is critical. It is also common in chemical processing equipment, food and beverage handling applications, and architectural or decorative uses where corrosion resistance and surface finish are important.
How does Aluminum 1100 compare to other aluminum alloys?
When compared to alloys such as 2024 or 6061, Aluminum 1100 offers superior corrosion resistance and higher electrical conductivity but significantly lower mechanical strength. It is best suited for applications that prioritize formability, purity, and corrosion resistance rather than structural performance.
Can Aluminum 1100 be custom cut or processed?
Yes. Aluminum 1100 can be supplied with value-added processing services, including custom cutting, machining, material testing, and full certification. Special packaging and export-ready handling options are also available for both domestic and international shipments.
