Stainless Steel A286 AMS 5736

AMS 5736 is a sub-type specification of Stainless Steel A286, a precipitation-hardenable super-alloy based on iron and a high concentration of nickel. The alloy possesses many favorable properties, including high strength at elevated temperatures, good ductility, good low-temperature non-magnetic strength down to -320 °F (-196 °C), and excellent fabrication.

AMS 5736 is solution heat-treated at 1800 °F (980 °C), followed by oil or water quenching. Tech Steel & Materials offers this specification in the form of bars, forging, ring, and tubing. The main uses of AMS 5736 include jet engine components, industrial gas turbine parts, superchargers in internal-combustion engines, non-magnetic cryogenic parts, high-temperature afterburner parts, tanks, piping, pumps, etc.

The alloy can be welded using standard procedures, gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, and shielded metal arc. Any nickel-based steel can be used as a filler alloy and an A286 wire from other similar specifications. That said, the parts should be welded in the solution annealed condition. Welding parts in aged condition can result in cracking.

Maximum strength can be obtained using solution treating, followed by cold working and aging. Meanwhile, the alloy can be readily formed and cold-worked, similarly to other austenitic stainless steels. Machining can be done using traditional methods.
