Stainless Steel 17-4PH AMS 5643

AMS 5643 is a sub-type specification of the 17-4PH martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel. It’s an alloy with many favorable characteristics, such as high strength, excellent mechanical properties, and good corrosion resistance.

Tech Steel & Materials offers AMS 5643 in a bar, forging, ring, tubing, and wire in a Condition A solution-annealed form. However, additional heat treatments can be used to achieve other conditions with different tensile strengths and hardness levels.

AMS 5643 has high concentrations of chromium, nickel, and copper. It is mainly used for the manufacturing of mechanical seals, oil patch, and pump shafts. Furthermore, it finds use in many fields, including the aerospace industry, petrochemical industry, general metalworking, food processing equipment, etc.

AMS 5643 is easy to fabricate, although it reacts best to hot forming at 1742 to 2192 °F (950 to 1200 °C), with annealing at 76 °F (25 °C) and aging. Moreover, the alloy can be cut using mechanical means, such as shearing, machining, abrasive waterjets, and bandsaw.

Ultimately, this specification holds excellent welding characteristics, perhaps the best when compared to similar steels. It is also very easy to weld using all traditional methods. For best results, though, we recommend the use of AMS 5643 wire.
