Alloy L-605

ASTM F90-14 is a sub-type specification of Cobalt L-605, a cobalt-based superalloy with high levels of chromium and tungsten. While the Cobalt L-605 superalloy is mostly known for its high-temperature strength up to 1500 °F (1093 °C), and excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures up to 2000 °F (1093 °C) in corrosive environments, the ASTM F90-14 is mainly used in the medical field thanks to its outstanding biocompatibility and non-magnetism.

The ASTM F90-14 specification is used explicitly for surgical implant applications, like manufacturing of heart valves and other stent applications. ASTM F90-14 is available on Tech Steel & Materials as bar (round, rectangular or with complex shape), wire (round, rectangular or with complex shape), or fine wire with diameter smaller than 0.063 inches (1.6 mm). ASTM F90-14 is finished in the bright annealed condition and appropriately packaged to limit damage.

The main property of ASTM F90-14 is biocompatibility with soft tissue and bones, tested in real-life applications for over a decade. Like most similar superalloys, ASTM F90-14 is not free of adverse reactions in the human body. However, past experiences have shown that the level of these reactions is generally acceptable.
